FAQ

how are you able to give 100% of your profits to charity?

We’re set up as a charitable trust, so we have no shareholders grabbing a stake of the profits. Once we’ve paid all our normal business running costs, everything else is profit and goes straight to water projects. We are a Registered NZ Charity (#CC42882), so all profit must be put towards our charitable purposes, in the case of wurld water, that’s our water projects.

In the future, once we’re up and running, we’ll look at a reasonable salary for our directors who work full-time for wurld. But we’re not quite there yet!

how can I be sure that charities are getting 100%?

Feel free to look at our financial statements – we’ll do a part year return to our financial year end of March 2010, which will be available in April 2010. We want to keep things as transparent as possible, so you really can see where the money’s going. If you’d like to see our first Annual Report (available April 2010), just sign up here.

how do you select your charities?

Well, for a start, we don’t want to be running the charity operations ourselves. That’s just re-inventing the wheel! There are already thousands of charities out there on the ground, doing a good job setting up operations. Our skills are in running the wurld business to raise money for them.

To select an appropriate charity, we look at several things. The cost of admin is one of the first things, as we like to get as much of the money as possible to people who need it. Admittedly, there are always going to be admin costs to get things running, but we try to choose charities who keep it to a minimum.

Location is another factor. There are needy places all round the world, but we like to support locally too. That’s why we started in Samoa.

And variety is also important. Instead of supporting just one charity, we want to see lots of things happening in communities all over the world, that’s why we choose to support small, and quickly completed projects.

what do you think about tap water?

NZ is blessed with great tasting, clean water from most of our taps. We recommend people chose tap water wherever possible. Tap water has a much lower carbon footprint than bottled water, and is much cheaper too!

wurld water is for people who are out and about where tap water isn’t available, or need a bottle to carry their water in – it’s the best ethical bottled water choice. We recommend you reuse our bottle a number of times, before placing it in your recycling bin where possible.
